Residents of the Central Coast were left reeling this week after it was announced that controversial radio presenter Alan Jones would be joining community station Coast FM963.
The move was the brainchild of station patron John Singleton, who reportedly extended the invitation after being inundated with questions from locals that he couldn’t answer.
“If anyone knows how to provide a national voice for the residents of the Central Coast, it’s Alan Jones,” Singleton said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to have him on board.”
Jones, known for his conservative views and outspoken commentary, will conduct a regular session for no fee, during which he will answer questions from listeners and provide his take on local issues.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to share my wisdom with the good people of the Central Coast,” Jones said in a statement. “I may not know everything, but I’m always happy to give my two cents.”
Not everyone was thrilled with the news, however. Many locals expressed concern that Jones’ views did not align with the values of the Central Coast community.
“He’s a divisive figure who’s been known to make inflammatory comments in the past,” said one resident. “I’m not sure he’s the right fit for a community station.”
Others pointed out that Jones was not exactly an expert on the Central Coast, having spent most of his career in Sydney.
“He’s got no idea what life is like here,” said another resident. “I don’t see how he’s qualified to weigh in on local issues.”
Despite the backlash, Coast FM963 says it is moving ahead with the new “Ask Alan” segment, which will air daily. Only time will tell whether Jones’ presence will be a boon or a bust for the station, but one thing is for sure: it’s going to be an interesting ride.
